It’s not every day you get to photograph someone who’s just as comfortable behind the camera as they are in front of it. That’s exactly what made my recent portrait session with Savannah V. so great. From Pampa, TX, Savannah is currently a student media intern at Texas Tech University.
I’ve had the pleasure of crossing paths with her while covering Texas Tech’s Track and Field and other sporting events. Let me tell you, this girl knows her way around a camera and takes phenomenal photos, video, and engaging content for social media. I’m not going to lie, shooting for another creative always adds a lot of pressure for me, but it’s also a huge compliment.
Given the sweltering summer heat, we kicked things off with a quick studio session. Now, I know what you’re thinking—studio shots can be a bit on the dull side. They’re notorious for being tricky when it comes to showcasing personality. But that’s where the challenge becomes fun for me. I strive to make these sessions lively, and Savannah’s spirited personality made it easy.
We decided to wait until it cooled down (at least a little bit) before heading out to shoot along Historic Route 66 in Amarillo, TX. This iconic location provided a perfect backdrop to capture Savannah’s vibrant energy. With her poised demeanor and infectious smile, she brought a special magic to every frame.
The studio shots were anything but boring. Savannah’s charm and confidence lit up the room, turning each click of the camera into a moment of pure joy. Her natural ability to connect with the lens made the process seamless and incredibly fun. It was clear from the get-go that she was in her element, whether she was lounging casually or striking a pose with a burst of laughter.
Once we hit the streets of Route 66, the real magic happened. The historic murals and retro vibes of Amarillo’s beloved strip provided an endless array of creative possibilities. From the shots against colorful graffiti to playful poses in front of vintage signs, every shot was a testament to Savannah’s versatility and zest for life.
The session was a perfect blend of planned and spontaneous moments. Savannah’s nature and willingness to experiment allowed us to capture a variety of moods and expressions. Whether she was making a funny face or giving a contemplative look, each shot was a true reflection of her multifaceted personality.
“I am always the one behind the camera, so shooting with Joe finally let me be myself while also getting to let my creative side and personality show in my poses as well as opening the door for my confidence to shine. The shoot was definitely my favorite of all time.” – Savannah V.
Working with Savannah was a reminder of why I love what I do. It’s not just about capturing a person’s appearance, but about telling their story and celebrating their unique essence. Savannah, thank you for trusting me with your portraits. I can’t wait to see where your talents take you next, both in front of and behind the camera.
I’ve compiled a gallery of images from our shoot that day, showcasing Savannah’s journey from the studio to the streets of Amarillo. Here are some of my favorites:
