The 2021 Lone Star Conference Track Meet did not disappoint this year!
Held at the WTAMU track and field complex, D2 schools from all over the area showed up with some serious skill and talent this year. Being a local of Canyon/Amarillo area, I was undoubtedly rooting for the West Texas A&M Buffalos and Lady Buffs to sweep the meet.
And boy did they.
Both the men and women divisions won the entire conference, with the Lady Buffs earning 227 points, and the Buffaloes earning 149 points.
There were some amazing highlights throughout the conference, but on the third and final day of the meet, there were some extraordinary accomplishments made by the WTAMU athletes. In the final heat of the women’s 100 meter dash, the finish was amazing to photograph. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places were all snatched by the Lady Buffs. DeOndra Green grabbed the gold with a time of 11.66. The silver metal went to Alana Wilson with a time of 11.70, bronze to Leah Belfield with a time of 11.73, and runner up to the podium was Valda Kabia with a time of 11.77.
Another incredible victory to watch was that of Benjamin Azamati in the men’s 100 meter dash. Azamati won the final with a time of 10.07, making him the 5th fastest man in the country! The second place finisher was significantly behind with a time of 10.30. Azamati’s time was even faster in the prelims with a 10.03 time, beating second place by an entire three-tenths of a second in that heat.
I couldn’t be more proud for the Buffs and Lady Buffs in their outstanding victories in a large majority of the events. Check out the gallery to see more of the action!
